IN PERSON: “Light Photography with Light Painting: Creating Stellar Images” presented by Lisa Cuchara

Night photography is amazing, capturing the movement of the planets, stars, clouds, milky way, etc. Join North Haven Camera Club on October 14 when we host Lisa Cuchara, who will capture our imagination as she covers topics to help the listener create their own stellar images, such as:

• gear
• red flashlights
• lights for light painting
• taking a high ISO test shot
• focusing at night (a few different techniques depending upon the circumstances)
• exposures under 30 seconds
• long exposures (1-60 minutes)
• star trails and cloud stacks
• star stacking in-camera using Live Composite

This program will also discuss Light painting, which is using a hand-held light source like a flashlight or LED light in a dark room (or outdoors at night) to illuminate your subject. The camera is set to bulb mode (or Live Time or Live Composite on OM SYSTEM or Olympus cameras) and placed on a tripod using a long exposure to capture the light while you walk around and illuminate the subject with light. There are degrees of light painting from the less desirable “Light Pointing” (standing at the camera with a light source directed at the subject) to more effective “light painting” (moving the light in a brush movement, typically starting from one direction, using a flashlight) to the extreme of “Light Sculpting” (using a flashlight to “Sculpt with light” using multiple layers and post-processing). Come learn how to see light and light paint!

IN PERSON: “Waterfall Photography” presented by Joe Howard

North Haven Camera Club is proud to host a presentation by Joe Howard on capturing waterfalls. Joe will be sharing his expertise in how to get those smooth flowing waterfalls that we all find so appealing. 

Joe Howard is a passionate landscape photographer originally from St. Louis, Missouri now living in North Haven, Connecticut. He has a love for landscape photography, more specifically waterfall photography, Milky Way photography, and enjoys all things outdoors. More often than not you’ll find him out in the pouring rain shooting a waterfall, up all night under the dark sky shooting the Milky Way or wandering aimlessly around the countryside in search of a rustic barn. IN PERSON: “Creating Photos with Impact” presented by Chane Cullens

Our April presenter Chane Cullens explores the power of photography to evoke emotion. He delves into four crucial principles:

• Storytelling: crafting narratives;
• Creativity: finding unique perspectives;
• Composition: guiding the viewer’s eye; and
• Technical Excellence: achieving quality through skill and editing.

Additionally, the presentation includes practical guidance on how to identify these principles within your own photographs and provides concrete ideas for enhancing each area.

Chane Cullens is a local Connecticut photographer, and has been using Canon cameras since 1987. Known for both his photography presentations and computer knowledge, he shares insights at various local events and conferences. He has received an Honorary Member (HonNEC) award from NECCC for his service on the Council and to the photographic community. Chane focuses on educating photographers on a wide variety of topics from camera and photo basics to helping judges give constructive feedback.
