BEGINNER’S HANDS-ON PORTRAIT & LIGHTING SESSION

To be held in two parts, Tuesday, May 9 and Saturday, May 13

Costs for Part 2 only (Choose the appropriate amount below)

  • NoHCC Members: $15 (via PayPal)
  • Non Members: $30 (via PayPal)

Part 1: Tuesday, May 9th, 7pm – FREE

The goal of this 2-part session is to learn about and practice posing and lighting. This is to be educational so attendees come away with something tangible they have learned about portraiture and lighting so they can utilize it in the future. The goals are: to help improve your images of family or friends by using flash, various light sources, various light modifiers and creative posing techniques. These sessions will not necessarily be for the attendees to take amazing portraits at these 2 events, although that may happen, it is for attendees to learn how to utilize lighting and posing techniques for future image creation on their own. As an added bonus, you could switch this around and use some of these posing techniques with yourself when others ask to take your photo. You may never again say “I don’t like to have my picture taken because I never look good in pictures”.

Laura Parisi will be sharing her knowledge of how to improve our images with posing and lighting. We will be meeting live in person at Hope Christian Church. We are hoping to be able to also share this session by zoom for those of you that cannot join us live in person. Feel free to social distance and/or wear masks as desired. We will project images taken during the demonstration on the screen for all to see the results. We will have raffle prizes at this event. So, plan to buy raffle tickets at our Tuesday evening event.

Part 2: Saturday, May 13th, 1-4pm $15.00

Will be a Field Trip/Workshop for those that are interested (max. 24 people) – to be held at either Gillette Castle or Hope Christian Church (if there is bad weather). We will have 6 models dressed in various colored outfits. Attendees must have attended Part 1. We will be using all the techniques learned in Part 1 during the Part 2. Field Trip/Workshop.

Field Trip

DETAILS: Part 1

Come and join your fellow photographers, live and in person, for a fun evening of learning how flash can make your subjects pop and really enhance our images.  Many people are not comfortable using flash.  Many people prefer to just use available (ambient) light.  Let’s try something new and see the differences between the results. We will learn about common problems in photographing people, different types of lighting techniques, how to pose your subjects/ family/ friends/ grandchildren/ dogs/ cats to get the best lighting on their faces AND how to help determine the best side of the face to photograph. We will also talk about posing to make all look good.  These techniques will help you bring your images from a vacation/snapshot type photo to a more professional looking image.

Techniques/Details of what we will be learning in Part 1 and what we will be using to create images in Part 2:
We will be using various types of posing techniques and lighting options with different types of light modifiers and gels on flashes.

  1. No flash, just reflectors to fill in the shadows in faces and prevent raccoon eyes,
  2. An on-camera flash (your own flash if you have one – if not we can share)
  3. Continuous light to replicate using harsh sun
  4. Making a golden sunset (replicating the sunset in the background) as a rim light (aka hair light) behind the subject. We will be using a CTO Gel (Color Temperature Orange).  Ever wish you could get that beautiful sunset and have a golden light on your subject at the beach in ONE SHOT?
  5. Changing the color of the output light from the flash with a CTB Gel (Color Temperature Blue). This CTB Gel reverses the color of the skin tone using Kelvin to replicate Blue Hour
  6. Off Camera flash – where the flash is off to the side at either 60 degrees or 90 degrees. This gives nice shadows on the subject and creates more of a three-dimensional image compared to straight on flash which is called Flat Lighting

Diffusers:  we will have some various types to look at, demonstrate and use: Examples: Foam Core Board (just a white board), MagMod accessories, Soft Boxes, Reflectors and Umbrellas.

DETAILS: Part 2

Field Trip/Workshop for those that are interested (max. 24 people) – to be held on Saturday May 13 – from 1:00 to 4:00 at either Gillette Castle or Hope Christian Church (if bad weather). We will be using all the techniques we learned on Tuesday night – these will not be covered in detail again in Part 2. That is why attendees of Part 2 should attend the Part 1 session.  We will have 6 stations with 6 models dressed in various colors.

For those that are interested in attending the Saturday workshop, attendees should have attended the full Tuesday evening session.  Deadline per person will be April 22.  There will be a maximum of 24 photographers at the field trip, the fee will be $15 per person for North Haven Camera Club Members and first come first served.  On Sunday, April 23 we will share this opportunity to our surrounding club friends at a cost of $30 per person. The money collected will go towards gift cards for our models as a thank you.  They would also appreciate emailed photos of your best shot(s) of each model.

We are trying to ensure that each photographer be given enough time to photograph each model multiple times and that each model will be looking into each photographer’s camera.  We will have 6 groups/stations, each with a model, 2 helpers, and 4 photographers assigned to each group. We will be rotating the groups between the stations so everyone will have the same amount of time to photograph each of the 6 models.  Registered attendees should bring camera and lenses (the best portrait lens length is between 80 and 105, but feel free to bring a variety of lenses) and flash and a remote trigger, if you have them, to be able to control your flash off camera. No need to worry if you don’t have a flash or remote trigger, we will have ones available for sharing within each group.
